My secret for a good return back to skiing: choose the right period!

When my daughter suggested going skiing in April, I was rather sceptical. Why go skiing at Easter time? 4 good reasons...

Between the sometimes excessive prices during the February holidays and the crowds... it's not always encouraging. This suggestion of going skiing in April was the chance to make the most of a special time and enjoy the last snowflakes of the season! I’ll tell you more...

MY SECRET FOR A GOOD RETURN BACK TO SKIING: CHOOSE THE RIGHT PERIOD!

1/ There are fewer people, the atmosphere is more relaxed and welcoming

We know that ski holidays in high season are often synonymous with stress, congestion at the ski lift and groans in the equipment hire shops.

None of that at the end of the season!

The season is nearly over and there are fewer skiers making the most of the final moments to enjoy the snowy slopes.
A very relaxed vibe prevails and the atmosphere is welcoming.

The seasonal staff are pleased to see more clients arriving before the end of the season and enjoy having the time to chat and advise... this is difficult to do in high season!

2/ It’s cheaper

Easter weekend marks the end of high season and the end of high prices!

For 4 days of skiing, I was able to take advantage of the spring rate: 36 euros instead of 46 euros for a day pass. This works out at a little over 150 euros for 4 days of skiing.

As for ski equipment, I kitted myself out for 75 euros for the 4 days.

Accommodation was also cheaper. I found an apartment for 2 people in the centre of Sallanches for around one hundred euros per person for 4 days.

3/ Weather

Mountain weather is often the subject of lengthy discussions! Of course it's difficult to forecast the weather as conditions are extremely changeable in the mountains: it varies from one hour to the next, from one mountain to another, but this is part of the charm of the mountains.

In April, temperatures start to rise, the sun shows its face a little more and it's feels good.

4/ Snow

At that time of year, the snow is known not to be as good compared to February. However, if it happens to be a good period and you climb quite high then the April snow compares favourably to February! Extra snowfall this Easter weekend made for perfect snow.

That said, going skiing at Easter remains a gamble: so maximise your chances by aiming high! I was spoiled spending this weekend in the Mont Blanc mountain range: there was even more snow. Even the locals said they hadn't seen that for many years...

In summary, my Easter weekend in the Mont Blanc mountain range was a real breath of fresh air and meant I could enjoy skiing without the usual disadvantages.
Don't be afraid to change your ways!
