1/ SKIS

To get the proper gear for ski touring, let's start with the skis. The compromise you are making here will be having a ski that is big enough to be comfortable going downhill and have fun but not too big so that they remain easy to handle on the way up. Ideally, the waist should be wide so that you can easily ski on powder snow. A waist width between 90 and 100mm will be ideal for minimising the surface area and hence the weight that you have to carry in climbs, and providing enough versatility for skiing on all terrains.

Naturally, there are lots of different skis,  for those who like climbing at a fast pace, those who prefer the pleasures of descending, etc. but in this article, the goal is to explore what's available. You will have plenty of time to choose your mode of ski touring later, if you like!

2/ SKINS

They are meant to help you ascend without having to remove your skis, because of the grip provided with each step by the grain of the bristles that prevent natural slippage. Buy ski skins that are wide enough for your skis, by taking the waist width as a reference, and then have them cut to the size and shape of your skis.

3/ BINDINGS

There are two kinds of bindings.

• Frame bindings are genuine ski bindings with a system that releases the heel for climbing, like on a pair of snowshoes. They are quite heavy for climbing but have the benefit of being safe and comfortable on the descent.

• Tech bindings with a pin-and-hole system, on the other hand, are very lightweight and comfortable when climbing, and increasingly comfortable on the descent. However, they require special ski boots.

4/ POLES

As for the poles, the telescopic models will be perfect for adjusting their size up and down.
