Where do you store your skiing or snowboarding equipment during the summer?

Sun and heat are welcome and winter seems now far away. One question remains though: where did you store your skiing or snowboarding gear? We asked you and some mountaineers this question to discover everyone's little habits...

When was your last ski day?

That was also the first of the season... It was on the 7th of February in Val-Thorens where I spent the week-end at my best friend's who works there. The day was beautiful, sun shiny weather, fresh snow, a real candy. I am not gonna tell you about my sore muscles at the end of the day though... I wasn't physically prepared and the day after was... hard.

When did you put your gear away this year?

When I came back home from that week-end, on the sunday night.

And where do you store your gear in the summer?

Je les range dans le garage, où ils dorment jusqu'à la saison prochaine avec ceux de mon père et de mon petit-frère.

When was your last ski day?
My last skiing trip was in Chamonix, we went to ski the "Vallée Blanche" with my boyfriend, on the 21st of April. The waether was gorgeous, and the snow typical of the spring season: just defrosted on top, a bit hard underneath, the perfect conditions for such a day.

When did you put your gear away this year?

I put my skis away not long after that day, by the beginning of May.

And where do you store your gear in the summer?
We have a pretty big attic storage room in our building, under the roof, perfectly insulated. This is the perfect place to store winter and skiing gear and clothing.

Your last ski day?
On the 24th of May, we went ski touring to look for some fresh snow in altitude. It snowed quite a bit in May above 2000m. The weatehr was cloudy but not too cold and the snow was perfect for this time of year, a bit heavy but quite fresh and cold.

When did you put your gear away this year?
I didn't really put it away, I always keep my skis at hand because there are always nice opportunities for some skiing, even in summer!

And where do you store your gear in the summer?
I keep my skis in my toilets all year round. The room is quite big and dry, no temperature variations. This is the perfect place to keep my skiing gear accessible and protected.

Your last ski day?

I went skiing at "Les Grand Montets" (Chamonix Valley) on the 22nd of April, with a real spring snow.

When did you put your gear away this year?

On the 1st of May, I took advantage of the holiday.

And where do you store your gear in the summer?

This is kind of a ceremony for me. We take advantage of the first sunny hot days to pout a thick layer of wax on our the skis of the whole family. Then we store them in the garage, a place that is dry, tempered and sheltered for the U.V.

COLIN, MOUNTAIN DEPARTMENT MANAGER AT THE WED’ZE MOUNTAIN STORE - PASSY, CHAMONIX VALLEY, FRANCE

Your last ski day?

I ended this great ski season by mid-April with a great powder session in Saint-Gervais, just perfect.

When did you put your gear away this year?

Once we had done the last runs down, I wanted to store my skis properly in the best conditions... Guillaume, our workshop technician, took great care of them with its "end of season care" (a thick layer o fwax applied on the soles to nourish them for the whole summer).

And where do you store your gear in the summer?

Once this "end of season care" is done, I put them in a ski bag to avoid the dust in the springs of the bindings, and off to the cellar to stay in a tempered place. Can't wait for the next snow fall, my skis tips are already wriggling!

Ground rules for storing your equipment properly

If you want to store your skiing equipment properly at the end of the season, here are some quite useful ground rules:

. Clean your equipment, wihtout forgetting to dry well every part of your skis or snowboard (edges, soles, bindings), with a soft cloth, and put some grease on the bindings if needed.

. Perform an end of season waxing, or better let your Workshop specialist at your Decathlon store do it for you. A thick layer of hot wax spread on your soles is the best way to protect your skis against rusting during the off season.

. Regarding your boots, make sure to ventilate your inner boots by taking them out of the shell before you store them in a boots bag, well closed to prevent any distortion.

. As for the choice of the storage place, choose somewhere dry where the temperature doesn't go below 10°C, your skis placed next to each other vertically.

Grooming and storing your equipment welle at the end of the season is ensuring a good start of the next season. If you want to learn more about maintaining your snow equipment and the importance to storing it well, don't hesitate to ask your Workshop specialists at your local Decathlon store, they'll be pleased to help and advise.
