What is the snow cover like at the moment?

In France and across Europe, many ski resorts are already waiting for you with the snowfall as early as November. High altitude or localised snow storm, discover where there is plenty of snow to make the most of your Christmas ski holidays.

Above 2000 metres in France: pleasure guaranteed

The first resorts opened last month, taking advantage of their high altitude and the first snow falls. Above 2000 m, without a doubt, the snow will be excellent, and more or less plentiful dependent on location.

You can therefore rely on Val Thorens and Alpe d’Huez to provide you with the pleasure of skiing without waiting further, with respectively 85 and 05 in the resort, 150 and 155 at the summit.

Tignes can equally thank its glacier. With 130 cm of snow at the summit, approximately half the skiable area is accessible (17 ski lifts and 32 pistes).

The Southern Alps should not be forgotten as Montgenèvre provides 70 cm of snow in the resort and 130 cm at the summit - what more could skis hope for.

Snowfall forecast for December 2016

The forecast for December states the return of the cold (which is already noticeable) with an incoming dry cold. This cold will maintain present snow cover and allow resorts to add a little artificial snow where necessary . Rainfall is not really forecast but the little there is, will provide the mountain with good snow which will be maintained and which will serve as a good underlay for the remainder of the season.

December is therefore a good time to head beyond 1800 m. With the first snowfall over 2000 m, and a little help with artificial snow, resorts such as Rosière 1850 and Valfréjus can also partially open their areas.

This is already the case with La Clusaz which opens some of the pistes and ski lifts at the weekend.

Switzerland remains a highly prized destination amongst skiers in December. Between 110 cm and 145 cm of snow awaits on the slopes of Saas Fee and Zermatt to set off on this thrilling adventure.

In Italy, the slopes of Cervinia-Breuil already have 160 cm of snow, whilst the resort of Pontedilegno Tonale has already opened its first slopes and ski lifts with over 1 metre of freshly fallen snow.

Finally, Norway also benefits from the altitude and local climate to attract the early skiers looking for fresh snow. The resorts of Geilo and Oslo Vinterpark have already opened the majority of their areas with snowfall which varies in the region of 50 and 80 cm on the slopes.

What's in store for later on?

The weather forecast for the rest of winter have stated a December with little rain although quite cold, temperatures which are often below the average for the season. From January, the rain kicks in continuing into February, with the cold staying put. The season should provide plenty of fun, as December's snow fall will be greatly heightened and improved with the rain at the beginning of the year.*
